In the Wake?
Is winter on its way out? Have we seen the last of frigid temperatures, ice and snow covered roads, ice dams, snow shovels and ice melt? One can only hope. But depending on how you look at it this is only a reprieve until next winter comes. Forecasters are predicting more out of the norm winters, such as the one we just experienced, in the years to come. For most, the last fifteen plus years of winters have been the norm. Yet for others, they remember when winters, like the one we just had, were the norm.
While unprecedented roof leaks in Boise and the surrounding valley have caused inevitable havoc on homeowners, property owners, and tenants, it is not a forlorn event destine to repeat itself. Here’s what to look for in the coming months as preparations for winter 2017 are put into effect:
Building Codes – As this winter took its toll on a host of businesses and homes in the area, building codes and safety regulation changes are in the process of being updated to take into account possible weather conditions. As a consumer, knowing these changes will make you an informed buyer, investor or tenant.
Roof Snow Removal – More snow removal services will be prepared when the first snow hits. However, not anyone can efficiently and safely remove snow from roofs. Roofing systems need to be taken into account when performing such work. Don’t just hire anyone, do your homework and make sure you understand the damages they could cause your roof when removing snow. And make sure they know, too.
Supplies and Tools – Roof rakes, roof pucks, squeegees and brooms, these and other tools for the care and maintenance of roofs will not be in short demand, unlike they were this season. Once again, a little foreknowledge on what is safe for your roofing system and what is most effective will go a long ways.
