Things to Keep in Mind to Protect Roof Leaks in Winter Season
Temperatures are holding low, which means that the snow is sticking around and continuing to build up as we get new storms. That means your roof could have the potential to leak. Roof leaks in Boise, Idaho and the surrounding valley can be easily remedied by Upson Company. A few things to keep in mind from the commercial roof repair division as winter weather continues:
- Snow build-up
Build-up of snow on a roof with little heat gain throughout the day means added weight to your roof and building foundation. New roofs are designed to withstand the added weight, but what about older buildings and older roofs? If there is a question about your roof’s ability to hold-up under the added weight of snow it’s time to have a professional come out and check the integrity of your roof.
- Drainage
While snow is increasing on roofs after each storm only a minimal amount is melting and making its way to and out of roof drains as temperatures stay below freezing. Heat tape inside drains keeps them from freezing. But snow and ice on the roof can keep snowmelt from reaching drains. Slush can get isolated on roofs with nowhere to go, freezing and re-melting as the temperature rises and falls. If the temperature is above freezing and you don’t have any drainage from your drains there could be a blockage in or near drains.
- Falling Hazards
Snow accumulation on awnings, overhangs, patio and porch coverings run the risk of snowfall hazards. Gravity is reliable and once so much snow has accumulated on any slope it will eventually give way and meet lower ground. Snow rails are a potential solution, especially over sidewalks, entrances and driveways. Snow removal is the best solution for awnings and sloped patio or porch overhangs.
